#3 - Smart Tokens case study – A new world of functionality

The Wild West of Web3 by BorgoAcademy

Howdy Fam!

We have reached #3 already! Thank you for sticking with me 🤝 .

As we embark on another deep dive into The Wild West of Web3, let's set the stage with the three waves that have been shaping our journey.

Always dropping alpha.

Understanding Smart Tokens

Tech jargon can be a headache, right? So let's cut through the noise. "Smart Tokens" might sound like one of those high-tech buzzwords, but let's break it down. To help us out, I've been tuning into insights from Mathew Sweezey, the Chief Strategy Officer at Smart Token Labs. Sweezey is a good fren of mine, we worked together back at Salesforce and I can tell you, he knows his sh*t.

In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Sweezey explain Smart Tokens like i'm five:

"We've seen tokens as currencies and we've seen tokens as collectibles... but for us to get to the next era we really have to see tokens as something more than just currencies and collectibles and see them as experiences."

Imagine tokens not just as static digital assets but as active participants, shaping our interactions and redefining the way we engage with the digital world.

It's like giving superpowers to those digital bits and bytes, allowing them to interact, adapt, and evolve based on the environment they're in. Dope, right?

Meme of the week.

Smart Tokens in action:

1. ENS domain tokens: ENS is a decentralized domain naming system built on the Ethereum blockchain. It allows users to replace complex Ethereum addresses with human-readable names (like example.eth). These names can be linked to various Ethereum resources like wallet addresses, websites, and more.

Here are some use cases that demonstrate how ENS functions as a smart token: managing, renewing, setting records, or facilitating quick transfers for the purpose of selling your .eth domains.

2. ERC-6551: The ERC-721 standard enabled an explosion of non-fungible token applications. Some notable use cases have included “breedable” cats, generative artwork, and exchange liquidity positions.

However, NFTs cannot act as agents or associate with other on-chain assets. This limitation makes it difficult to represent many real-world non-fungible assets as NFTs. For example:

  • A character in a role-playing game that accumulates assets and abilities over time based on actions they have taken.

  • An automobile composed of many fungible and non-fungible components.

  • An investment portfolio composed of multiple fungible assets.

  • A punch pass membership card granting access to an establishment and recording a history of past interactions.

3. SmartLayer from Smart Token Labs: Introduces tokenization in ways that create better customer experience and greater business efficiency.

  • Make it easier to scale growth partnerships

  • Make it easier to achieve GDPR & PII data sharing compliance

  • Make it easier to connect digital experiences and services

  • Improve customer experience by token based personalization

  • Improve customer experience by token based access

Deep dive into SmartLayer

As we've touched upon a few lines above, STL (Smart Token Labs) is doing some remarkable work in the tokenization space. But to truly appreciate their impact, it's worth diving a bit deeper into their applications and the vision of the team and their CMO, Brent Annells.

Here's a snapshot of some practical applications Brent highlights:

1) Tokenized airline tickets: A seamless travel experience from booking to boarding, all encapsulated in a token.

2) Tokenized event access and perks: The future of events sponsorship - tokens replacing physical tickets, granting access to events, concerts, and conferences, while enabling sponsors and partners to provide perks based on token holding.

3) Tokenized customer experience: Elevating brand interactions with token-based rewards, memberships, and exclusives.

4) Tokenized digital rights: A robust system to protect and manage digital content rights, ensuring creators are recognized and rewarded.

5) Tokenized business services: A new era of B2B interactions, streamlined through tokenized systems from contracts to payments.

In Brent's words, "We believe this will deliver a more open and innovative internet for all". And you know what? It's a vision I share, a future where our online interactions are seamlessly powered by tokens, making the digital realm more intuitive and interconnected.

Time to get your hands dirty!

If you've ever wondered what mainstream adoption of Web3 tech would look like, this is for you. Within the first 21 days since the launch of SmartLayer, over 500K passes were created. Additionally, 165k people joined their Discord, and 185k followed them on Twitter. Pretty crazy, huh?!

At this point, you're probably wondering, 'Mr. Pink Beanie, what the heck are those passes?'

Mind-blowing stuff!

Since Smart Tokens act as miniature dApps with business logic and programmable interfaces, offering diverse applications. The Smart Pass takes advantage of that to enable unique experiences:

  • Frictionless Use: Unlike traditional crypto wallets, Smart Pass utilizes an off-chain token protocol called Attestation. This enables smooth and hassle-free claiming and utilization without needing a crypto wallet. (This is how you get your grandmother to use Web3 😉.)

  • Compatibility with Mainstream Wallets: Smart Pass is compatible with mainstream wallets like Apple and Google Wallet, broadening accessibility. Users can engage without adopting new tools, aiding mass adoption.

  • Open Loyalty Program: The Smart Pass introduces an open loyalty system, extending benefits like discounts, VC pitch opportunities, and event access to holders. This builds on the Ethereum Foundation events loyalty program.

  • Next-Gen Tokenization: Smart Pass symbolizes a new tokenization era. It combines on-chain and off-chain tokens to create seamless experiences beyond currency and collectibles, enabling businesses to enhance efficiency while safeguarding customer data.

  • Quests and Dynamic Interaction: Smart Pass incorporates quests, offering users a dynamic, interactive experience. Completed quests update pass information, allowing direct interaction without external apps or websites.

  • Privacy Focus: Attestations, while Web3-based, prioritize privacy over public blockchains. This addresses concerns businesses have about tokenization's privacy implications, enabling them to embrace Web3 benefits securely.

Smart Pass is not just a pass; it's a glimpse into the upcoming wave of tokenization, where tokens evolve into powerful digital primitives. These tokens drive frictionless interactions, innovative experiences, and business efficiencies, revolutionizing the token landscape.

A conversation worth tuning into

For the curious minds wanting to dive even deeper, I recently had a chat with Sweezey on the 'RightClickSaveTheWorld' podcast, hosted by me and Anthony Day.
We explored the world of Smart Tokens, their potential, and the future of Web3. Don't miss out on this insightful conversation!

Real talk: I have been collaborating with STL for almost a year now. But here's the thing - I'm sharing these insights because I genuinely believe in what they're doing. This isn't a 'shill' or 'part of my deal' thing; Smart Tokens are the next biggest wave, and as I promise you, I’ll be sharing here what I’m living and breathing on a daily basis.

Alright, fam! We've unpacked a lot today, from understanding the essence of Smart Tokens to the groundbreaking work of Smart Token Labs. I'm genuinely pumped about the endless possibilities and opportunities this space holds.

Stay curious, stay weird and Let’s Fuck*ng Grow!
